Oral Sedation
Many of our patients at NVOMSA experience some anxiety because of their dental procedures. We can help! An oral sedative is a safe and effective way to help you feel more comfortable during your appointment.
What is Oral Sedation?
Oral sedation involves the use of prescribed medication taken by mouth before your dental procedure. This method helps you achieve a state of deep relaxation and calmness, allowing you to undergo treatment without the stress or anxiety often associated with dental visits.
When Do You Need Oral Sedation?
Oral sedation is particularly beneficial in various scenarios, including:
- Dental Anxiety
- Lengthy / Complex Procedures
- Difficulty Staying Still
- Children’s Dentistry
How Does Oral Sedation Work?
During your initial consultation, we will assess your medical history, discuss your specific needs, and determine if oral sedation is the right option for you. If oral sedation is recommended, we will prescribe a medication that you will take before your appointment. You will take the prescribed medication as directed, typically an hour or so before your dental appointment. When you arrive for your appointment, you will be in a relaxed state, making the dental procedure more comfortable. After the procedure, you will need someone to drive you home, as the effects of the medication may linger for a short time.
What are the Benefits of Oral Sedation?
Oral sedation has many great advantages over other sedation methods. The benefits include the following:
- Reduced Anxiety
- Enhanced Comfort
- Easy to Administer
- Amnesia Effect
- Non-Invasive
Is Sedation Safe?
Oral sedation (and other forms of sedation) are very safe and effective. Your dentist will determine the best sedation method for you based on the nature of the procedure and your medical history.
Whether your procedure requires sedation or if you’re just feeling a little nervous, talk to your dentist about oral sedation.
